Have you ever had a sauna or a sauna bath as it is often called? If not, you might want to add this to your list of self-care ideas for 2020.
After having a sauna you feel both amazingly clean and cleansed. Sometimes I go to my gym just to enJOY a nice hot sauna that I don’t have to chop wood and light the fire for :-)….. especially on a 𝕔𝕠𝕝𝕕 𝕨𝕚𝕟𝕥𝕖𝕣’𝕤 𝕕𝕒𝕪. In fact I just might go have one this afternoon!
Saunas have been around for 1000’s of years. Saunas are a great way to get a deep cleanse of the body and to sweat out toxins and impurities and the best part is that they are so relaxing and enjoyable!
The Finnish culture is well known for their saunas pronounced ‘sownaas’ or something like that. 🙂
There are different types of saunas. The first saunas were holes in the ground, with a fire pit in the center and a roof to cover the fire, keep the heat inside and protect everything from the outside elements such as rain and snow. Today saunas usually consist of a small building or room in a house made of wood, usually cedar which smells amazing, and a stove of some sort; either wood or electric. There are also infrared saunas which are well known and used by advocates for personal health and wellness. And let’s not forget steam rooms. You see these often at gyms and spas.
Staying in a sauna not only helps to detoxify through sweat but using a sauna helps to promote blood flow, open nasal passages and drain sinuses, provide more oxygen to tissues and organs and even for some provide relief from aches and pains from arthritis and inflammation. Suffers of asthma sometimes find benefit too. The secret is to customize the usage to both your pleasure factor and health conditions.
And of course if you have any health issues please research how to safely use a sauna in appropriate amounts of time for your particular health condition. Many people can feel light headed while using a sauna so it is important to start off very gradual in the amount of time you spend in a sauna and it is very important to stay hydrated and to rehydrate by drinking lots of good quality water. Eating plenty of fruits after is also a great way to rehydrate and also to add micronutrients into the body such as vitamins and minerals.
Those with blood pressure issues need to be extra careful but keep in mind saunas are known for their role in helping with cardiovascular health so be sure to do your research and to discuss with your health care provider.
One of the things I really like about saunas is they help the liver a lot by removing toxins and getting the blood flowing throughout the body. These are two jobs that our livers handle out of many. Liver health is so important these days as we are seeing an epidemic of ailments such as viral overload, fatty liver, congested liver, sluggish liver and the list goes on.

In conclusion saunas not only offer natural detoxification, they are also relaxing and enjoyable. They help to relieve pain, stress and anxiety so why not pamper yourself more by adding in regular ‘sauna baths’ into your self-care routine going forward in 2020. Let Go. Let go of self-judgment even if you give yourself a time period. Ex. I am allowed not to judge myself for the next hour while I am doing this task. Eventually not judging yourself will become a habit.

Be childlike in your wonder. See things as though they are the first time you are seeing them. Get excited about that shiny red apple or the sun’s rays dancing on the wall.
When we least feel like resting because we are ‘too busy’ is probably when we need it most. Even if we take 5 minutes just to sit or rest, it helps a lot!
The next time you are feeling frazzled or overwhelmed, take a little time out to just stop. When we are in Go Go Go mode, adrenaline is being produced constantly and this is not healthy for the body or mind. There are so many people out there suffering from adrenal exhaustion and overwhelm.
Tenderness is a quality that will take you a long way in life.
When I saw this picture of the three hands, all I could think and feel was ‘tenderness’.
The synonyms of tenderness which are also beautiful: affection, fondness, love, devotion, lovingkindness, emotion, sentiment, sentimentality,
I think my favorite synonym is the ‘lovingkindness’ one. Tenderness and loving-kindness are two beautiful gifts that we can give to both ourselves and others. If we treat all people through these two attributes, the world will be a much kinder and more peaceful world where love can shine through.
Be kind to yourself. Be kind to others. Be kind to animals. Be kind to plants. Be kind to the earth. The list of ways to practice kindness and tenderness are endless but it starts with tenderness for oneself. When one can feel the frequency of kindness toward oneself and experience its effects, one can project kindness out into the world. It’s kind of like a flashlight. When you charge your own kindness batteries you are able to project your light of kindness onto others. 🙂
Our greatest strength lies in the gentleness and tenderness of our heart.

One of my favorite self-care modalities is going for regular Reflexology sessions. Not only do I find it so beneficial for my health and wellness, but it’s so relaxing! And I am one of those people who love having my feet touched, rubbed, and given attention :-), so this works for me.
In reflexology, pressure is placed on areas of the hands and feet in order to improve healing and reduce pain. The idea is that there are points in the hands and feet that correlate and are connected to other areas throughout the body. These points are called reflex areas.
You may have seen a reflexology chart before that shows these areas of connection. For example, the ball of the foot is connected to the heart and chest while the lower back and intestines are connected to the heel of the foot. Reflexology dates back to at least ancient Egypt. Illustrations on tomb walls show physicians using the foot to heal the entire body. Over
time, this practice has evolved, and today modern research backs up the premise

Reflexology and massage often go hand in hand, but
they aren’t the same thing. Massage can
take place all over the body and focuses on the soft tissue in the body such as
muscles and fascia. Reflexology is a
specialized practice that focuses on the reflex points in the hands, feet, and
ears, whereas massage often takes place over the entire body.
Acupressure is another similar healing art, but it is
also different from reflexology.
Acupressure addresses energy lines called meridians. With this practice there are 14 long lines of
energy that run the length of the body and there are hundreds of pressure
points along these lines.
Some of these pressure points are found along the
feet, hands, and ears. However, there
are relatively few compared to pressure points found throughout the entire
body. Again, reflexology focuses only on
the feet, hands, and ears.
Reflexology may be combined with massage or
acupressure, but it can stand alone as well.
Some reflexologists choose to get certified in multiple therapies while
others work only in reflexology.
Reflexology has been known to have health benefits for
thousands of years. It can help to
improve physical and mental health by reducing the effects of stress and
anxiety. It can provide relief from
headaches and other forms of pain. It
can improve blood pressure, circulation, and can be used to combat the symptoms
from cancer and cancer treatment.
This healing art can improve your sleep, increase your energy, and assist with improving your mood. If you suffer from mental health issues, arthritis, diabetes or a neurological condition you’ll find that reflexology is complementary therapy.
As far as side effects go, reflexology has relatively few. Some people report having sensitivity in their feet after a session. You might also experience fatigue, a runny nose, or coughing afterward. This is because the practice of reflexology can release toxins and your body will work to rid itself of those. Side effects usually last less than a day and are rarely serious.
I highly recommend this wonderful modality as part of your regular self-care. Taking care of yourself is a very high form of self-love and is so, so important. Reflexology is an excellent way to practice self-love, healing, and improving your overall well being.
