The word vitamin first appeared in dictionaries as recent as 1912. Before vitamins were discovered doctors recommend food itself as a therapy but it was quite basic. For example to eat carrots for vision and to eat citrus fruits to prevent scurvy.
Scientists have discovered and labelled 13 vitamins that are considered essential for health – essential because our bodies need them and they do not manufacture these nutrients. This means that these vitamins must come from food or from supplements.
